  • The five major causes of premature aging: the sun, smoking, lack of sleep/stress, lack of exercise/poor diet, and exposure to the elements.
  • The sun is really our skins worst enemy.  80 to 85% of all premature aging is caused by UV rays.  They break down collagen, impairs skins ability to repair itself, and attacks our elastin.  Try to get a moisturizer and foundation with sunscreen built in.  Just know that you can't "double up".  Wearing a SPF 15 moistuizer and a SPF 15 foundation doesn't mean you get SPF 30 protection.  You are still only getting SPF 15 protection.  You can get added protection by using a chemical sunscreen (SPF) and a physical sunseen (zinc oxide).
  • Smokers are more likely than non-smokers to develop wrinkled, leathery skin, as well as a yellowish hue to their skin.    Especially around the lip area.  Not to mention it turns your teeth yellow and lowers the pitch of your voice.  making you sound older as well.
  • Lack of sleep causes dark circles under the eyes.  Everyone knows your body heals itself when you sleep.  Well, your skin heals itself too.  You get the most "healing" the first four hours you are asleep.
  • Stress is inevitable, just like aging! But it also contributes to premature aging. When we are stressed we perform repetitive movements (like frowning & furrowing our brow) that impart permanent damage.
  • Exercise keeps muscles toned and stimulates blood flow.  Poor diet leads to lack of nutrition of the cells.  I'm not saying you have to be a health nut, but trying just a little makes a big difference in your skin.  When there are problems with our insides the only place the toxins have to be released is through our skin.
  • Exposure to the elements, meaning excessive exposure to heat or cold, can cause an imbalance in your sebum (oil) levels.  Without oil our skin becomes dry and unprotected.  That explains why people with oily skin usually don't have as many wrinkles as thoes with dry skin.
